New Bronze Smash Australia vs. Pakistan International Test Match for 6! PDF Print E-mail
Written by Jay Roper
Friday, 23 July 2010 13:49

The Australia vs. Pakistan International Test Match was the first Major Event available to our new Bronze Young Leaders... and with SAYLS Team Manager Mentor Meg, current SAYLS Young Leaders Jack, Jake and Liam, 11 new Bronze Young Leaders (Matt, Kirsty, Phil, Ash, Hayley, Lewis, Jade, Tyler, Chris, Reuben and Jemma) completed the TEAM to travel to Headingley.

At 05:30 many eyes were still glued together but we met on time at the Sheffield Train Station ready to get set on our journey.  By 06:45 we landed in Leeds our connecting train a tad late at 07:10 however we still managed to make into the stadium around 07:30am on time to meet Alison and the team from the Yorkshire Cricket Board.

Yorkshire Cricket Board Cricket Academy Young Leaders T-Shirts were sported (which were being sold for £10 in the store... each!) by all our Young Leaders, very proud to be wearing the badge of their home county.

Roles began with merchandise selling and general roles within the stadium preparing for what we hoped would be a huge crowd to see two of the top cricketing nations battle it out.  Unfortunately come 10:30 and first bowl time, the stadium was rather empty, most likely due to the overcast black clouds that threatened to ruin everyone’s day.

After being equipped with boxes of crisps, coffee and more the Young Leaders were aloud onto the pitch at players lunch break to oversee a Kwik Cricket tournament which everyone did excellently.  The little joker Ash was cracking jokes left right and centre, with the Arches duo of Lewis and Matt brightening everyone’s day throughout, each and every one of the Young Leaders did a fantastic job and contributed brilliantly.

'Thanks Jay, Meg, Tom and the SAYLS team I really enjoyed it on Wednesday and hope you did too.'
Phil, New Bronze Young Leader.

'Thanks for yesterday it was really good.'
Kirsty, New Bronze Young Leader.

'A big thank you for your care and attention to detail with the kids yesterday. Once again a big thank you.  Tyler really enjoyed it.'
New Bronze Young Leader Parent.

'Thank You to the Young Leaders who attended they did a great job.'
Alison,
Yorkshire Cricket Board.

SAYLS Walk Miles at the GB Wrestling Cup Competition PDF Print E-mail

SAYLS Young Leaders Grace, Josh, Sam, Robyn, lead by Team Manager (Team Manager Mentor from September 2010) Sarah, attended the GB Wrestling event on Saturday 17 July 2010 at Ponds Forge.

Taking the role of Competition Stewards, their role were to look after and chaperone the elite athletes to and from the event area ensuring the event schedule ran smoothly throughout the very long day from 09:00 until 20:00.

The Major Events staff from Sheffield were very impressed with the Young Leaders contribution saying:

'After a slight delay to the days proceedings (IT issues, not our fault though) the long day began, and as ever the team on site from SAYLS were thrown straight into the mix.  They were given roles where they were responsible for ensuring the athletes were at their respected matted area ready for their bouts and result running between each of the 3 mats and the event office.  I think Grace must have walked several miles in the first couple of hours that morning literally, I'm not joking!  So that left Sarah, Josh, Sam and Robyn with the task of rounding up the athletes for their respected bout, which was no easy task because quite a lot of the athletes couldn't speak English or if they did it was only a little.  But every time I saw them I kept checking to see if they were OK, and as usual it was a positive response with a smile on their face and they clearly knew what they were doing.

So finally I just want to say a huge THANK YOU from me personally to you all and it was my pleasure to work with you five on Saturday.  It’s always a massive relief to me / MSEU knowing that I have such a confident, pleasant and hard working group of young adults assisting us in the whole process and being confident in the knowledge that we can leave you to work without any worries or concern.

I hope you enjoyed the day and I'm sure I'll see you all again in the coming months.'

Paul, Major Events Unit, Sheffield City Council.

Well done TEAM, another fantastic event, brilliant contribution and clearly excellent feedback.

'Movin' On Up' 2010 SAYLS Celebration Evening PDF Print E-mail
Written by Jay Roper
Friday, 23 July 2010 13:21

The 2010 SAYLS Celebration Evening took place on Thursday July 8 at Hillsborough Stadium, the home of Sheffield Wednesday Football Club.

Guests including the Head of the city Council Mr. Paul Scriven, other VIP's, parents, new and old Young Leaders alike gathered at the 1887 Lounge to celebrate what has been a fantastic year with SAYLS.

Gold Young Leaders Becky, Beth and behind the scenes Tom (Stage Manager) ran the event from beginning to end, and with the rest of the Gold Young Leaders, they co-ordinated and hosted the event from the table decorations, to the running order and awards.

Key speeches from enthusiastic Young Leaders including Katy, Josh, Adam, Alex, Amy, Ryan and Mohsin were extremely influential and represented what we are all about perfectly.  In addition to this, DVD blogs from Frankie and Beth about their disability trampoline coaching and community volunteering, with a written speech from Gold Young Leader Holly rounded off what was a fantastic schedule from a fantastic bunch of Young People.

Awards for Community Young Leader of the Year (Beth & Frankie), School Sport Young Leader (Will & Liam), Major Event Young Leader (Amy), Bronze (Josh), Silver (Carys) and Gold (Becky) Young Leaders were handed out to those who have really shone with SAYLS this year.

The final award went to Alex who won the Ian Anniss trophy.  This prestigious award was earned through him being a true inspiration to his peers and us as staff, a fantastic accolade for a fantastic Young Leader.

Team Managers Meg and Sarah were chosen by staff members as the top two Team Managers to become volunteer SAYLS staff next year and step up to the Team Manager Mentor role. Here they will manage a group of around thirty Team Managers next year and contribute as SAYLS staff in team meetings.

The event ran smoothly, everyone seemed to enjoy it and it was a fitting end to an overall excellent year with SAYLS.

'We feel we have to write and congratulate SAYLS for hosting a fantastic evening last Thursday.  It really was well organised, very well presented and being Wednesday fans the venue was absolutely perfect!'
SAYLS Young Leader parent.

'Thanks for the invite to ‘Moving On Up!’.  It was a really impressive event and I thought the young leaders did brilliantly.  SAYLS is exactly what the Inspire programme is all about so we are really pleased to have you on board!'
James, London 2012 Inspire Mark & Yorkshire Gold.

'I just wanted to say a huge well done for last night.  It was a great event and I really enjoyed listening to the Young People speak about their 'journey through sport'.'
Karen, Forge School Sport Partnership.

Well done to everyone involved.

Tanzania

Team Managers Meg, Dan and Tash returned recently from their work experience placement in Africa (Tanzania).

The eight week placement began on Saturday 1 May 2010; a long trip to London and flight across the Ocean, following a long bus journey saw them arrive in Malya where the real work began.

Malya and Mawanza were the first destinations for the SAYLS trio to inspire as many young people through sport as they could.  Next was Arusha, and after a very exclusive expedition to Zanzibar the trip ended at the East Africa cup at the base of Mt. Kilimanjaro.

'Seeing what we have was tough at times, but so inspiring to know that we were actually making a difference at the same time.  The kids out there literally have nothing.  Some days in schools we would use bottles as cones or stumps, rolled up paper as balls and twigs for line markers because equipment was simply nowhere to be seen.  Afterwards the kids would be so happy if we gave them the bottle with a lid so they could carry water, things that we throw away daily in our country.

I remember one day buying a kid an ice cream.  Ten of his friends flocked around him within seconds to ask for a bite... the little boy told them to lick it and pass it on sharing between all of his friends, something rarely seen in England yet most could afford to buy there own ice cream or another one if needed.  They have so little, something I guess I wasn't and probably couldn’t be prepared for, but something I will remember forever.

We had a brilliant time and would like to thank SAYLS for donating the funds they did to help us on the trip and for supplying the SAYLS polo to give to a child.  It is hard to describe how unbelievably grateful the kids out there are just for something so small that is taken for granted on a daily basis everywhere else.  Living conditions there are awful but the people are so amazing, something I will cherish and never ever forget.'

Meg, Team Manager (Team Manager Mentor from September 2010).

Rother Valley British Triathlon PDF Print E-mail

British Triathlon And Paratriathlon

Sunday mornings are usually a lazy one for most of us; however this Sunday was somewhat different.  Becky, Carys and Amy all arrived at the Rother Valley country Park for the British Triathlon Festival at 7am this weekend... I think Carys was a little confused as she didn't realise there were two 7 o’clock in one Sunday!

As the rain poured down, the four of us sat in the little cafe drinking tea with egg on toast and bacon sandwiches... but the luxury didn't last long...

By 9am we were course side running the main drinks station, rain thrashing down left, right and centre, the athletes splashing drinking water all over the girls as the frantically replenished the cups, all hands on deck so to speak.  It didn't make for much of a summer's Sunday morning, however the atmosphere was great and we all really enjoyed it.

'One Step Beyond' event management company were very impressed with the efforts of SAYLS and have invited us to work with them again on future events.

Next up is the World Goalball Championships at the EISS... if you are not involved already, send an email and be involved!  This will be a big one!

Well done this weekend girls and thank you for your continuing support with SAYLS.
